Heinrich von Bibra’s contribution to German Wine

Heinrich von Bibra is not a name that will ring a bell for most of non-German readers, however, in Germany he is known for having been a fair and successful Abbey of Fulda, who instated free education and was responsible for building a remarkable network of roads and bridges throughout old country. As a result, schools and roads have been named after him. But, he also became inadvertently responsible for one of the most significant notes in German wine today: Edelf?ule or Noble Rot.

The biologists among you will know this benevolent fungus as Botrytis Cinerea and while some may fear it, others praise it. Essentially, it infests the grape and rots through its skin, leaving you with a raisin-like fruit. As the grape slowly dries out the concentration of sugar rises, leaving you with that distinctive sweet taste. In German wines this is called “Sp?tlese” or “Late Harvest”.
Now, how was the Abbey of Fulda responsible for this again? Well, legend has it that the messenger sent by Heinrich von Bibra to give the order for harvesting the grapes was robbed en route and as a result the cutting of the grapes was delayed three weeks. Upon inspection of the half rotten grapes, they were declared spoiled and were left to be given to the peasants who in turn produced a surprisingly tasty wine. The Sp?tlese was born.
