Pinot Gris, Ruländer or Grauburgunder?

Hailing from the French region Burgundy, this grape variety found its way detouring through Hungary and Switzerland all the way to Germany, in the 14th century. Its French name, Pinot, comes from the French word for pine and describes the grapes’ resemblance to a pine cone. Pinot Gris or Grauburgunder is also known under a third name in Germany: Ruländer. Apparently the salesman Johann Ruland cultivated this grape variety in his garden and unbeknownst to him, he was growing Pinot Gris. These grapes were popular amongst German wine drinkers and he was responsible for making them available across all of Germany.

Regionally, the Ruländer had many different names in Germany but nowadays Ruländer is the one that stuck. Grauburgunder or Grauer Burgunder are also officially accepted synonyms. There is a difference in the production of the two, though. The German wine growing region “Baden” is especially famous for the Grauburgunder where it takes up a solid 10% of the total vineyard area. Altogether, this grape variety makes up almost 5% of German wines. That doesn’t sound like much, however, this wine has a solid reputation.
在德国一些部分区域,“Ruländer”也有许多不同的叫法,但是“Ruländer”还是最为普及被大众认可的。而“Grauburgunder” 和“ Grauer Burgunder”这两种名字都更为官方学术。虽然,这两种的由来相当不同。

here are two approaches to this Grape that lead to two very different results and, therefore, two different names. The Ruländer from Baden is known for its late harvest time, even to the point of noble rot, a benign fungus that winemakers use to get a distinctive taste out of the grape. It leaves you with a thick, sweet wine. A newer approach, however, is to pick the grapes earlier and select only the healthy ones. This causes the aroma that the Rul?nder was known for to have changed to a more sophisticated one, with less sweetness and more acidity. A great companion for any meal, really. The latter method is generally sold under the name Grauburgunder and, personally, does this somewhat hard to grow, high maintenance grape more justice. For its thin skin makes it vulnerable to changes in climate and requires careful handling. But, if done right, you won’t regret the effort that went into this delicate grape variety.
灰皮诺有两种不同的采摘酿造模式,这是造成它有不同名字的一个主要因素。在德国巴登产区,最广泛的方法是让葡萄在藤上停留更长的时间,等到葡萄上感染了贵腐菌后再采摘下来。这种良性的菌种能够帮助酿酒师创造出独特而美味的葡萄酒。这种葡萄酒口味醇厚,甜味出色,浓郁芬芳。

因为未能得到充分成熟的葡萄皮很薄,非常容易收到气候变化的影响。需要更小心的处理。但是如果处理得当,他会给你应有的回报,绝不会后悔为它所付出的所有努力。
