Wine Consumption in Germany is increasing slowly but steadily

While Germany is world renowned for its affluent beer consumption, wine is slowly but surely gaining popularity. According to the “Statista”, a German online statistics portal, an amount of around 21 Liters of wine per person on average were consumed in the year 2013, showing a steady increase over the last ten years. Worth mentioning is that every second bottle of wine that is bought in German supermarkets is of German origin. While several years back it was considered more common buy imported wines, especially from Australia and Chile, it is now German wine that dominates the German market and Riesling is at the pole position.

If you break it down you will find out that German men from Rheinland-Pfalz and Baden Württemberg drink the most amounts of wine. This is no surprise since the grape grows on every sunny hill in those regions. Women dominate the Saarland in terms of wine drinking.
Wine won’t catch up to beer, of which every German consumes around 110 Liters on average a year, any time soon and I think it’s safe to say that it never will. But still, it is nice to see that there is a growing appreciation for the world of wine even in what is considered to be the biggest beer nation in the world.
